The late Nathan Stansbury served as 15th Judicial District Court District Attorney from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. He was one the most powerful and influential political figures in the region. This was a time when Democrats still held every major elected office and he served along with the late Sheriff Don Breaux.
As DA, Stansbury was under a national spotlight for high profile cases. He successfully prosecuted Gilbert Gauthier, the first parish priest convicted of child molestation, at a time when many hoped the issue would quietly go away. He also prosecuted Dalton Prejean, who was executed for the murder of Louisiana State Trooper Donald Cleveland after a conviction and more than a decade of appeals. He was known for his commitment to truth and justice and his legacy lives on today.
