Lafayette City Police Chief Toby Aguillard appeared on KADN’s Consumer & Finance Segment with Discover Lafayette host Jan Swift and news anchor Carter Simoneaux to discuss what to do if you are in an auto accident, as well as advice on being an attentive and responsive driver.

Under Louisiana law, you must remove your vehicle from the road if it is operable. You also are required to call the police to report the incident if the damages are over $500 or there is injury or death. Since your insurance policy probably requires this anyway, it is always smart to call 911 for help.

Distracted drivers are a big problem and have caused an increase of pedestrian accidents, especially around UL – Lafayette’s campus. It is never a good idea to text while driving and the police are now watching out for violators. Bottom line: be careful and respect life.
